Why Linen?

At Kelly Brown, we stock a wide range of different fabrics, prints and textiles for curtains, blinds and window furnishings. When it comes to deciding on the perfect match for our customer’s homes, our beautiful linen range is the most popular choice- time and time again.

Linen is one of those fabrics that never seems to go out of style; effortlessly surpassing all the latest trends and fads throughout the years. It is regarded as a luxury fibre because of its lustre and texture. There is a crisp, clean appeal to linen; whether you opt for a natural tone or a coloured linen, it helps to make a room appear bright and fresh. The organic weave also lets in the fresh air if you choose to have a window open but want the curtains closed for privacy. Curtains made from linen drape beautifully, creating an interesting form, which changes depending on which angle you are looking from. They are elegant and chic but also timeless and will complement any interior space.

Linen is derived from cellulose fibres that grow inside the stalks of a flax plant. These fibres are spun, then woven into a tight weave of fabric- creating linen. The production of linen requires little processing and is readily available in its natural form, thus avoiding the use of harmful chemicals in the manufacturing process. Linen is considered to be the strongest of the natural fibres. It is woven with a tight weave, and the nature of the flax helps to ensure that the fibres retain their shape. Linen ages well; it is durable yet becomes softer with every wash. An added bonus to its lasting quality is that its biodegradable, offering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly choice for your home.

Linen curtains provide valuable insulation, helping to keep you warm in the winter and cooler in the summer months; making them more cost effective. It is an absorbent fibre which means it can move with changing humidity levels and is not affected by changes in temperature. It is also repellent to insects and UV resistant (which is perfect for the Hawkes Bay summer months!)

Linen curtains will complement any interior space, regardless of your style. Introducing linen into any room in the house is an easy way to add sophistication yet a relaxed vibe to your interior. They are a simple and classic textile that evokes comfort as well as luxury. These are the reasons why we think linen makes the perfect window dressing solution for your home.
